It’s that time of year again where drinking cider in London Fields is just not an acceptable way to spend your evenings, unless you want to potentially get frostbite of the extremities. No, the days of Al Fresco socialising is done with.
When the weather gets this cold it’s time to head back into the warmth of the open fired pubs and heated bars with their overpriced drinks and steamed up windows. You have to be a little bit more creative when it comes to drinking socially in the winter, unless you’re content to set up camp at your local or stay at home.
But we love the new at London is the Reason which is why we spend our Friday and Saturday nights freezing our toes off at the Bavarian bar at Winter Wonderland or more recently getting as close as possible to the heaters at Night Tales in Dalston.
The brilliant team behind Dalston Roof Park and Background Bars have come together to create the perfect winter venture that combines all of our favourite things; good music, great food and brilliant drinks. Could we ask for more?
Set in a disused East London car park Night Tales is set to run Thursday to Saturday in the run up to Christmas and is well worth a visit. Make sure to don your thermals in preparation as it’s worth sticking around for.
The space is fantastically decorated with heaters and open fires to keep revellers warm and draped canopies to protect from the elements. There’s an abundance of fairy lights and foliage which gives the place a magical Christmassy vibe. Upstairs on the Mezzanine you can take in the scene, find a spot for the evening or learn about mescal from the pros.
With some of our city’s most loved street food vendors including Smokey Tails and their famous Southern barbeque pulled pork. Patty and Bun, BAO with their mouth-watering steamed pork buns and soya milk fried chicken and the Japanese Gyoza bar Rainbo there is more than enough to satisfy even the pickiest eaters.
Once you’ve had your fill of the delicious food on offer grab a table and keep warm with something from the bar; there’s everything from mulled wine to hot spiced cider and even absinthe hot chocolate; because, why not!?
With Smokey Tails co-founded by one of house music’s finest Seth Troxler it’s hardly surprising that the music is a force to be reckoned with and the prospect of a surprise DJ set from the man himself is enough to make me get down there again.
The only problem I found is that just as I had had enough hot cider to make me want to dance the music wound down for the night.
Night Tales is well worth a visit if you’re looking for something fun to do, a great place to start the night but just make sure to wrap up warm!
- Night Tales runs Thu-Sat, 6-11pm
